IPL v’s Laser Treatment

Lasers have been used for over 20 years commercially as an effective method for removing unwanted hair. Few people know that Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) machines have been around just as long however how now been developed into a pain free treatment for permanent hair reduction.

The intense light explodes the hair but will only go down so far so you must make sure you shave as close to your appointment as possible (ideally the day/night before). Any hair will be pushed to the surface 7-21 days after treatment. Never wax whilst having IPL as the light targets the root of the hair. The light targets the melanin pigmentation in the hair meaning that hair removal is ineffective for “red heads” or if hair has turned grey over 6 moths prior to treatment.

At Stilo we believe IPL treatment is significantly more comfortable and affordable in comparison to laser treatment. The water-cooling system in the head of our naturalux numbs the skin before administering the light, therefore making the treatment session pain free. Skin may begin to feel slightly irritated after treatment for a few hours (similar to waxing) but apply aloe vera gel should sooth any redness.

As well as having a cooling system built in, the head on our IPL machine is larger than most lasers, making treatment quicker.

If you are using IPL for photo rejuvenation, the freeze head must come off, as clients must be aware of feelings and nerve endings so treatment can be little uncomfortable.

Stilo Pedicures

What crazy weather we've had in Cambridge this week. With this warmer weather it's the perfect opportunity to get the toes out and pop on your favourite sandals. With that in mind, you will need a pedicure to get your toes looking and fancy as your shoes.

Here are our top 5 tips for the perfect pedicure….

1) When removing your old nail varnish try to use an acetone free nail varnish as acetone can dry out and harm your nails.

2) Remove any hard callous skin with a foot file when the feet are dry, concentrating on heels and the balls of the feet. Water softens the skin and therefore you may remove too much when wet.

3) When you are filing your nail work from the inside out in a sweeping motion, do not saw at the nail this can cause it to split and weaken.

4) You should always use a base coat of polish as this will not only protect and strengthen the nail but will also prevent discoloration/staining of the nail plate.

5) Roll the polish bottle between your hands rather than shaking it will prevent air bubbles.

Winter Hair Care Tips

With all this cold weather and snow we would like to share our top 5 winter hair care tips....

1. Prevention is better than cure, so if you are heading out on a frosty day, it's worth popping on some headgear. A hat (not too tight as this will restrict scalp circulation) or scarf can help to protect your hair from the winter winds and thereby reduce their drying effects.

2. Try to cut back on shampooing at this time of year as very frequent washing can dry out your hair. Washing in warm water will help your hair to retain moisture, try not to keep your head under the water for too long as heat will only add to the dryness. If you can bear it, a cold water rinse will lock in the loveliness. We recommend using Redken Real Control Shampoo which provides moisture and control for dry hair.

3. Winter is the time when your hair needs all the help it can get so proper conditioning is essential. We recommend using Redken Real Control Conditioner which not only moisturises but also repairs and detangles.

4.
